Health and success, success and health –they both go hand in hand.

The way you start your day matters A LOT. Science has shown that our greatest willpower and self-discipline is found in the morning. Therefore the morning is the single best time to tackle things that require focus and a clear mind.

There surely isn’t a one-size-fits-all morning routine but there are certainly a few things that the most successful and healthy people do to kick off their day. I took a closer look at the habits of healthy people and also researched what successful people do when they wake up.

Here are 5 morning habits shared by the best of ’em!

1. Drink hot water with lemon

Most wellness gurus and health enthusiasts would tell you that this is the first thing they do when they wake up – and for good reason. Lemons flush out the toxins and unwanted material and the warm water wakes up the whole system to aid digestion throughout the day. Also lemons are high in vitamin C so they give you a nice healthy kick to start getting things done and stay healthy.

2. Exercise

This seems to be the one habit common to all successful people: they exercise early in the morning. Even Mr. Obama can’t start his day without a little sweat. Why? Because exercising in the morning improves productivity and the endorphins you will have rushing in your system after working out will boost your energy and your mood for the day. Also, chances are you will continue making healthy choices throughout the day.

3. Meditate

Science has already proven the health benefits of meditation: increased immunity, emotional balance, lowers blood pressure, anti-inflammatory due to a lower stress level, calmness… Meditation, especially mindfulness (i.e. being in the present moment), can also help with depression, anxiety and pain. So many benefits for such a simple practice! No need to stay still for hours while repeating a mantra. Just sit comfortably and breathe. Follow the sensation of your breath entering your lungs from your nose and going out again. Clear your mind before the hectic rhythm of the day begins.

4. Eat a healthy breakfast

Food is your body’s fuel, so give it good food for it to function properly. Here’s a quick and easy recipe: granola with greek yogurt and a sliced banana (you can add seeds like chia seeds for additional health benefits). It’s healthy and will keep you full until lunch time!

5. Make a to-do list for your day

Your day hasn’t started yet, your mind is clear and focused, so now is the best time to figure out what it will look like. Plan it all. List what you have to do. You will be more productive and go straight to the point. And that feeling when you ticked everything at the end of the day is priceless.
